ABDUL'S POLICIES

For A More Progressive Connecticut.

Connecticut stands as one of the wealthiest states in the nation, yet it is divided into two starkly different realities:

A reality where the affluent thrive and another where the working class struggles, living paycheck to paycheck.

Our schools lack sufficient funding, many families face challenges in securing affordable housing, and our environment deteriorates due to negligence. But this doesn’t mean we give up the fight.

During Abdul’s time in office, he has fearlessly confronted these challenges head-on with a commitment to community coming first. Our working-class families deserve a leadership that is committed and unyielding.

Abdul would be that leader with these policies:

Abdul believes in making Connecticut’s tax system more equitable to uplift the working class. He advocates for progressive tax policies that ensure the wealthy pay their fair share while alleviating the tax burden on lower- and middle-income families. By closing tax loopholes and implementing fair tax rates, we can generate the necessary revenue to fund vital public services, reduce income inequality, and create a more just and thriving economy for all residents of Connecticut.
Abdul is committed to properly funding our public schools, higher education institutions, and essential programs that uphold the social fabric of our communities. He understands that access to quality education is a fundamental right and a key driver of economic mobility. By investing in schools, providing resources for teachers, and expanding access to higher education, we can ensure that every child in Connecticut has the opportunity to achieve their full potential and improve their standard of living. Abdul also supports programs that address disparities in education, ensuring that underserved communities receive the attention and resources they need to succeed.
Abdul envisions a comprehensive public transit system that prioritizes working families and connects people to commerce and jobs. He advocates for environmentally conscious transportation solutions that reduce carbon emissions and attract young adults looking to stay in the state. By expanding and improving public transit, we can reduce traffic congestion, lower transportation costs for families, and make Connecticut a more attractive place to live and work. Abdul supports initiatives to increase the accessibility and affordability of public transit, making it a viable option for all residents.
Abdul is dedicated to addressing the affordable housing and homelessness crisis in Connecticut. He believes in taking on predatory landlords and land speculators who harm the quality of life and contribute to gentrification. Abdul supports policies such as just cause evictions and rent caps to protect tenants’ rights and ensure housing stability. Additionally, he advocates for state investment in the production of affordable housing, alongside efforts to stimulate private development. By increasing the availability of affordable housing and protecting tenants from unfair practices, we can create inclusive communities where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.
Abdul’s environmental policy directly addresses environmental racism and the climate crisis. He supports passing the Connecticut Environmental Rights Amendment to guarantee every resident’s right to a healthy environment. Abdul emphasizes eco-friendly housing and transportation initiatives that focus on a just transition for community members affected by the switch from fossil fuel jobs to clean energy. He is dedicated to protecting and expanding greenspace to enhance the quality of life for working families. Abdul has been actively fighting to turn the 6 Lakes property in Southern Hamden into a state park and supports the remediation of homes in the Newhall part of Hamden experiencing crumbling foundations. His approach ensures that environmental policies are inclusive and prioritize the needs of the most affected communities.
Abdul is a strong supporter of reproductive justice, taking a holistic approach that addresses the diverse needs of all individuals. He recognizes the importance of protecting and expanding access to reproductive healthcare, including contraception, abortion services, and maternal health care. Abdul is particularly committed to addressing black maternal health disparities and ensuring that women of color receive the care and support they need. By advocating for comprehensive reproductive health policies, Abdul aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives, promoting health equity and social justice across Connecticut.
